it suprising that admist all the cramming that i've been engaged in for my exams, i've learned some pretty "useful" facts:
1. MAC (Make-Up Art Cosmetics Ltd) was originally owned by two Canadians (Frank X2) and was sold to Estee Lauder in 1998.
2. McDonald's franchises serve beer in Germany and wine in France.
3. McDougall Douglas (a Canadian owned company) traded jets in the former Yougoslavia for canned hams (what a deal!! ).
4. Some countries have established some strategies that go beyond tariffs to prevent foreign competion. For example, Japan tried to keep out French skis by claiming that Japanese snow was different from French snow; the French retaliated by saying that French rain was different from Japanese rain, which made Japanese motorcycles too dangerous.
5. Scientist at the University of Guelph have developed a genetically engineered pig whose manure contains "very little phosphorus, a water pollutant that promotes the growth of algae".
Some well-known companies have encountered problems with global marketing:
6. When a Japanese company tried to use English words to name a popular drink, it called the product "Pocari Sweat".
7. A few Swedish companies tried to tap into the Canadian market. However, people in Canada may have difficulty with Krapp toilet paper; but perhaps thats not as bad as the translation of the Coors' solgan which translates to "Suffer from diarrah".
I'm almost done exams!!! Thank gud. |
